③ つまづきポイントを一つずつ解剖
ポイント① 「that ＝ あれ」だけじゃない！
that と聞くと「あれ」や「その」という指示語をまず思い浮かべますよね。しかし英文中では、すでに出た名詞の繰り返しを避けるための代名詞として使われることがあります。これが「指示代名詞の that」です。
Her attitude is different from that of her sister.
→ that ＝ her attitude（すでに出た "attitude" を指す）
→ that ＝ her attitude（すでに出た "attitude" を指す）
⚠️ 注意：なぜ it ではなく that なのか？
it は「すでに話に出た同一のもの」を指します（Her attitude is unique. It surprised everyone.）。
一方 that は「同じ種類の別のもの」を指すときに使います。
ここでは「彼女の態度」と「妹の態度」は別物なので、that が正解です。

ポイント② that の後ろに「of ＋ 名詞」がくるパターン
指示代名詞の that は単独では使えません。that of ～ の形で「～の（それ）」を表します。
The economy of Japan is larger than that of Korea.
→ that ＝ the economy（日本の経済規模は韓国のそれより大きい）
→ that ＝ the economy（日本の経済規模は韓国のそれより大きい）
The population of Tokyo is larger than that of Osaka.
→ that ＝ the population（東京の人口は大阪のそれより多い）
→ that ＝ the population（東京の人口は大阪のそれより多い）
⚠️ 複数形には those を使う：
The customs of Japan are different from those of Western countries.
（日本の習慣は西洋諸国のそれとは異なる）
→ 指す名詞が複数（customs）なら those に変わります。

ポイント③ different from ～ の語順を崩さない
日本語では「〜とは異なる」と言いますが、英語では different from ～（「〜とは」ではなく「〜から異なる」）が正しい語法です。

❌ Her attitude is different with that of her sister.
⚠️ 口語では different than も使われますが、フォーマルな文章・試験では different from を使いましょう。
